CARLIN HALL
Carlin Hall (b. 1984) is an American artist and filmmaker known for her ink paintings. Renowned for her monochromatic palette, Hall exclusively employs black and white to construct her evocative imagery. Through this deliberate choice, she invites viewers to engage with a visual dialogue that transcends color. Her finished works are a distinct combination of abstraction and narrative.
Hall was born in Williamsburg, Virginia. She developed an intense fascination with art at an early age. Her first influences were Piet Mondrian, Frank Stella, and Roy Lichtenstein. As a teenager, she painted homages to their works on her school binders and backpacks. Her first original compositions were made with charcoal, a medium she quickly abandoned in favor of ink. Hall later honed her skills at the Savannah College of Art and Design, graduating in 2013.
Hall is also known for her unique triptychs that trace the evolution of a single subject from its most abstract form to its most transparent. In these triptychs, the first panel is a deconstruction of an animal or object. By the final panel, the subject is fully formed. According to Hall, these triptychs document a journey from chaos to order and the human desire to make sense of the senseless.
Hall’s artistic practice is constantly evolving with new mediums. In 2025, she will release her highly anticipated short film, Le Défilé. This black-and-white animation, a visual exploration of themes found in the philosophical works of Heidegger and Jacobi, promises a cinematic
experience as thought-provoking as her static artworks. More short films will be released in 2026 and 2027.
Regarding inspiration, Hall looks to nature and the animal kingdom. Her favorite subjects are birds and the fauna of Africa. However, no subject is off-limits. When Hall isn’t painting or working on her short films, she likes to go to movies, hike, and spend time with her family.
